Rice is a member of the grass family. Archeological evidence indicates a sophisticated rice cultivation system existed in China and India over 7,000 years ago. There are 42 rice producing countries in the world, ranging from mountainous Himalayan to lowland delta areas. Rice is the staple food in Asia, Latin America, parts of Africa, and parts of the Middle East.

Worldwide marketing situation

The United States ranks 10th in total world rice production but only 15th in land area devoted to rice. Average world rice yield is 3.3 tons per hectare (1.34 tons per acre) compared to 6.2 tons per hectare (2.51 tons per acre) for the U.S. As a direct result of these high yields, the U.S. has been the second leading rice exporter in the world, accounting for over 20 percent of the rice in international trade, in last many years.

In 1995-96 India has emerged as a major rice exporting nation, and since than the U.S. is number 3. Vietnam is emerging as a major rice exporter in recent years and hopefully will become a leading exporter for coming years.
Thailand continues to be the largest exporter of the world.
Pakistan, Burma are also leading rice exporters depending on their crop seasons.

Within the U.S., 1992 statistics producers of rice Arkansas (1.32 million acres), Louisiana (611,000 acres), and California (389,800 acres) . Other large producers were Texas, Mississippi, and Missouri Florida. Examining the entire U.S. rice production, approximately two-thirds is marketed in the national markets and around one-third is exported.

The International Rice Research Institute - has estimated that by the year 2020 the worldwide consumption of rice will be 781.3 million tons per year compared to 455.2 million tons in 1990. This is an increase of 40 percent and would require an additional 24.22 million acres of land to be planted to rice with an average yield of 1.3 tons of rice per acre. This space of land is just not available. Some of this demand will be satisfied by increasing yield per acre, but it is obvious worldwide demand for rice will continue to increase.
